CHANGCHUN, Sept. 26 (Xinhua) -- Eight people have been arrestedfor allegedly killing black bears in northeast China's JilinProvince, police said Tuesday.

Using homemade guns and bombs, the gang is believed to havekilled at least three black bears since June, said a police officerfrom the city of Yanbian.

On July 23, police received reports about the sighting of a bearcorpse with its paws missing in Xinkai Forest Farm.

Examinations found the bear had been killed by a gunshot to thehead around a month earlier.

After a two-month investigation, police arrested seven suspectsand another turned himself in earlier this month.

A dozen bear paws and three bear gallbladders were seized.

In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), bear paws are believed tobe very nutritious, while bear gallbladders and bile have been usedin TCM treatments to reduce fever, remove toxins and treat liverand eye ailments for thousands of years.

Although black bears are listed as a national second classprotected species, poaching is not rare in China.

Last month, a 1.46-million-hectare national park for theprotection of Siberian tiger and Amur leopard habitats wasinaugurated in Jilin and neighboring Heilongjiang Province, whichincludes known black bear poaching sites.

The park is aimed at restoring the local ecology which has beendamaged by human activity and better protecting wild animals andtheir habitats. Enditem

ABUJA, Sept. 26 (Xinhua) -- The Nigerian government said Tuesday it was working to contain the further spread of yellow fever and to limit the impact of the killer ailment in the west African country.

Head of the Nigeria Center for Disease Control Chikwe Ihekweazu, in a statement made available to Xinhua, said a multi-agency incident management system has been instituted to ensure a rapid and coordinated response.

This followed a recent case of yellow fever in the north-central state of Kwara, Ihekweazu noted.

Yellow fever is an acute viral hemorrhagic disease transmitted by infected Aedes mosquitoes.

Its symptoms include fever, headache, jaundice or yellowness of the eyes, muscle pain, nausea, vomiting, and fatigue.

In line with World Health Organization guidelines, the official said, a vaccination campaign is being mulled to begin in the affected and surrounding areas on Sept. 30 to prevent further spread.

"Communication activities are being intensified to enlighten healthcare workers and the general public," he said.

Vaccination against the disease remained the most important measure in preventing yellow fever.

Yellow fever vaccine had been part of the childhood immunization schedule in Nigeria.
