G’day Joey Bosa Hat , Mates !!!

Koalas, beer and kangaroos are what people normally first think about when they think about Australia. Very few people would realize that Australia is actually the fourth largest exporter of wine in the world. One of their best wine inventions was the wine cask, or wine box, which is sold in most countries. Despite Australians loving their beer, they are also extremely proud of their wine producing industry, which generates over 6 billion dollars each year! So popular have Aussie wines become, that they now export more wine to the UK than France does!

The Australian Wine Industry’s History

Governor Phillip, who was the first governor of the penal colony that would later become New South Wales, brought the original vine cuttings on the First Fleet. Viticulture in Australia failed in its first attempts, most likely because the new settlers knew very little about the climate and growing conditions. However, with a lot of the persistence that Australians are renown for, vines planted by early settlers flourished in the right locations, and by the 1820s, the Australian commercial wine production industry was born. In 1822, an Australian winemaker, Gregory Blaxland, produced the first wine that would be exported from Australia, as well as also becoming the first winemaker to win an overseas award. By 1830, extensive vineyards were established in the Hunter Valley, which would become one of Australia’s more famous wine producing region.

The Australian wine industry started off slowly, most likely due to an unpredictable and unfamiliar climate, but were gradually gaining high praise from wine lovers in other countries. At the Vienna Exhibition in 1873, a couple of French wine judges had heaps of praise for a wine that was produced in Victoria. However, once they discovered the wine was actually Australian, they quit in protest because they could not fathom that such a high quality of wine was not actually French!

Australian Wine Varieties

Even though there are no native varieties of grapes in Australia, The Australian win industry has still managed to grow immensely from its humble beginnings. However, it meant that the early grape varieties had to be brought from places like Europe and South Africa.

At present, the major varieties of red wine grapes in Australia are Syrah (or Shiraz), Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling Semillon and Chardonnay make up the bulk of white wine grape varieties. Even though these are the most popular varieties, varieties from other countries such as France, Italy and Spain are also becoming well-known to the Australian wine industry, such as Sangiovese, Viognier, Tampranilla, Pinot Grigio, Petit Verdot and Pinot Noir.

Major Wine Regions of Australia

The vast majority of wines produced in Australia are in the states of New South Wales, Victoria, the southern regions of Western Australia, and South Australia, with the latter accounting for over 50% of the total wine production. That’s not to say that other states are not getting into the act! Tasmania has a slowly growing wine industry, particularly the Tamar Valley, producing some high quality Pinot Noir and Chardonnay to take advantage of the cooler climate found in Tasmania. Despite the much warmer, sub-tropical climate of climate of southern Queensland, major vineyards around the towns of Ballandean and Stanthorpe are starting their own wine producing industry.

Australian wines are generally a major feature of most wine shops around the world. Why not try one at your next BBQ! MADRID, May 1 (Xinhua) -- Matchday 35 in the Liga Santander could be divided into four parts. The battle for the title between Real Madrid and FC Barcelona, the struggle for third place between Atletico Madrid and Sevilla, the contest to qualify for next season' s Europa League and the fight to avoid relegation.

These are four things we learned from matchday 34 in Spain.

The battle for the title will probably go to the wire

Both Real Madrid and FC Barcelona won what looked on paper at least as their toughest games between now and the end of the campaign. Real Madrid made hard work of Valencia, while Barca cast off the first half shackles against local rivals, Espanyol, to claim what in the end was a comfortable win.

Barcelona still have to entertain Villarreal, which could be difficult, while Sevilla have yet visited the Santiago Bernabeu and Celta away could be a tough test for Madrid as long as Celta are not too focused on the Europa League. But it is hard to see either of the two losing between now and the end of the season. Real Madrid have a game in hand, which makes them favorites to win the title.

All-Madrid Champions League semi-final should be close run thing

All attention in Spain will be fixed on the first leg of the Champions League semi-final between Real and Atletico Madrid.

Atletico travel to the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium, still smarting from two final defeats to their neighbors, with especially painful memory of last season's loss in a penalty shoot-out. The two sides drew 1-1 recently in the league, but Real Madrid probably deserved more and have shown an ability to raise their game for big matches.
